A Library Without Breaking the Bank

by Dr. Mommy on May 18, 2010

Having an abundance of books is just a part of having a healthy and happy home school environment. My mantra on books is ‘you can never have too many books’. I have collected books for many, many years. With 5 children it is very easy to do. But having a variety of books does not have to cost a fortune.

Sure, it’s great to go to the local library and check out books, but having some of your favorites is always nice to see in your bookcase. And before long, you will start building your own library. We have books that range for simple board books to the classics. From starting to read books to series of chapter books.

There are many places you can find books to start your library or to add to your collection without breaking the bank.

Below are some ideas on where to find reading books and workbooks for your home school library.

  • Discount stores are great places to find books at bargain prices. Places like the Dollar Store have great workbooks to collect for your curriculum.
  • Warehouse stores and bargain book stores are great to find treasures at low prices.
  • Yard Sales are great places to find books at a fraction of the cost.
  • Thrift stores have an abundance of books to choose from.
  • Book fairs and home school book fairs are great for slightly used books or new books for promotional prices
  • Libraries usually have annual sales on their discarded copies.
  • Websites such as Home school Curriculum Swap or Paperback Swap or several home school forums are also great places to find books at very reasonable prices.
  • Ask your grandparents if you can rummage through their attics for beloved children’s books.
  • Another inexpensive method is to make your own. You can design your own curriculum and be sure to get exactly what you need, because you designed it.

Whatever method you decide, remember you can find an inexpensive alternative. You do not have to spend a fortune to successfully achieve a wonderful home library. It is very easy to accumulate books when you home school and when you are able to save money while doing so, only makes it more exciting.
